NEW ENVIRONMENTAL STANDARDS FOR WOODFIRES

What’s it all about

During 2004 the Ministry for the Environment released New Zealand’s first ever national environmental standards which included a specific standard regulating the installation of wood fires after 1st September 2005. In brief, this standard requires wood burners (slow combustion / closed door fires) to meet specific emission and efficiency criteria.

After the 1st of September 2005, the selection of the wood fire you choose may be affected by the size of your property.

Which emission “Zone”

·        If your property is two hectares or larger, you can install a wood fire which meets AS/NZS4013:1999. Basically this means no change as many wood fires currently sold in New Zealand comply with this standard.

·          If your property is less than two hectares, after the 1st of September you can only install a wood fire, which meets the new environmental standard of 1.5 g max. particulate emission per 1 kg of wood burnt and 65 % min. space heating efficiency.

Fires that are completely exempt from the above standard include:

Open Wood Fires

Multi Fuel Burners

Pellet Fires

Wood/Coal Stoves for Cooking

Coal Burners

However, every regional council in NZ may impose their own emission requirements, which could be more stringent than the new national standard.

Auckland Regional Council – Clean Air Plan

·        On the 1st of September 2005 the ARC’s Air, Land and Water plan also takes effect introducing restrictions on open fire places which should comply with a emission rate of 4g /kg of fuel burned and 65 % min. of space heating efficiency.

In short, the ARC’s stricter standards mean you can no longer install an open fireplace in your home since at present there are no open fireplaces on the market which comply to this standard.

The ARC also imposes restrictions on the other types of fires that the MFE has made exempt from their NES.

NOTE: if your property is two hectares or larger, you are exempt from the ARC’s strict standard and you are allowed to install an open fireplace.

Environment Canterbury

·        A very stringent emission requirement of 1 g / kg of wood burnt and 65 % space heating efficiency has been in force Canterbury-wide since 1st January 2004.

What’s the future

Fires by Design is currently working on the entire range of Warmington fireplaces in order to comply with not only with new National standards but also with stricter regional requirements.

We look forward to assisting you with any heating requirements you may have including any custom built fireplace.
